Out of Uniform Day – 23/11/16

Dear Parents,

Just a reminder that Wednesday 22nd November is an out of uniform day with a ‘sport’ theme. This is to raise money for one of our fellow Serpell students to travel to Sydney to compete in the long jump at a national level. Please bring a gold coin donation in order to support her in this exciting experience.

Regards,

The Foundation Team.

Growing Well

This term we will be learning about what is need for plants to grow. We have already started planting a range of plants in the classroom and on our excursion at the Botanical Gardens. We have planted seeds in different conditions, such as, in the dark, in sand and without water, to see what effect it has on the growth of the plant.

Amazing start to Term 4!

Congratulations on a fantastic start to the term. We have already delved into our new Inquiry topic, Growing Well, and are so excited for our excursion next week to the Royal Botanical Gardens to learn more about plants and how they grow. A reminder to bring back your permissions forms as soon as possible so that you can enjoy the amazing day that we have planned.

It is finally SPRING, so hopefully we will start seeing some nicer whether, however this means that we need to remember to be ‘Sun Smart’! Make sure that hats are worn to school and home each day and during recess and lunch play to protect us from the sun, and sun screen worn when necessary (we also have sunscreen in our classrooms if you forget).

What have we been up to?

We have been working so hard in our grades to learn about many new ideas these last few weeks. In our inquiry unit we have talked about the different people who help us in our community and how! We’ve discussed policemen and firemen (we even got to meet some firemen) and what types of things they do in our community to keep us safe.

We loved learning about the Olympics during our Inquiry! Did you know that in the olden days there were no Olympic medals? The winners got a flower crown to wear on their heads. This is called a wreath.
We imagined what we would do if we were Olympians! Would we be swimmers or runners, or maybe even soccer players or basketball players? We have a big variety of talented sports people in Foundation all with great imaginations.

During our maths learning time we have focused on a few new concepts. One of these is reading map coordinates. This has been invaluable! If you have an old Melways at home, it might be a good time to bring it out and give the children a good look. Maybe they can find the coordinates of where they live?

We have consolidated our knowledge of graphing and collecting data, and even worked a little more on Australian Currency, looking at dollars and cents together. What do you get when you put $1 with 20c? Well $1.20 of course! We are getting better and better at adding money. Soon the children will be able to do their own lunch orders!

In literacy we have been working so hard on our reading and writing and even ICT knowledge. Last Friday we even had an amazing author come and talk to us, and some of us even got to buy a signed book!

What an amazing few weeks in the Foundation building!
